India vice-captain Rohit Sharma has not scored a fifty in ODIs since January 28 and the fans had hoped that he would come up with yet another absorbing knock in the second game against Australia in Nagpur on Tuesday. The opener was also seen middling the ball at the nets on the eve of the match at the venue where he has a stellar record. However, Rohit disappointed the fans as he fell for no score in the match after Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and put the hosts to bat.

Pat Cummins denied runs to Rohit and took him in final delivery

Rohit took the strike against in-form pacer Pat Cummins in the first over and after conceding no run in the first five deliveries, Cummins drew the first blood by having the Indian batsman caught by Adam Zampa at third man. The delivery was short and wide and Rohit freed the hands to play a cut shot up and over the backward point. But since there was extra bounce, he managed to get a top edge and carried to the fielder who took a decent catch.

The sight of Rohit falling for a duck was not a happy one for the Indian fans for the team depends on his opening partnership with Shikhar Dhawan to get a good start. Captain Virat Kohli had an early appearance and he resurrected the innings with Dhawan for the second wicket southpaw perished. India won the first ODI in Hyderabad on Saturday by 6 wickets and would try to make it 2-0 in Nagpur to put Australia under a must-do pressure.

Rohit, who will lead Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League starting March 23, will also look to get back into some runs in this series. The current series against Australia is India’s final international assignment before the World Cup kicking off on May 30 and a return among high scores will do the opening batsman’s confidence a world of good.

Here is what the Twitterati had to say over Rohit’s dismissal:
