Twitter Reactions: Rohit Sharma gets to his 18th ODI ton in a pale chase
Rohit scored his 16th ODI hundred as opener.
Rohit Sharma isn’t just a player he’s a phenomenon. The Indian opener has all the class required for a successful white ball player and the moment he started to open the batting has quite literally turned some switch on and there seems to be nothing that can stop Rohit. England gave him a flat wicket, a mediocre target to chase and ordinary bowlers attempting to challenge him. Resultantly he scored a hundred in 82 balls as Team India marches on towards a win.
Nottingham has had the image of being an absolute feather bed, which classifies beyond just a good batting wicket. England were strangled by the Indian spinners especially Kuldeep Yadav who dismissed six of their batsmen. At a venue where they scaled the highest ODI total last time, England were bowled out for 268 and the class in the Indian batting this was never quite going to challenge them.
When Rohit is batting at his best ‘he’s got time, he’s got placement, he’s got hunger’ is what former England captain Naseer Hussain said on air. The first over he faced from David Willey was a bit edgy as the ball-shaped a tad bit, however, the Kookaburra doesn’t move after the first couple of overs and he had all the luxury in the world to play the shot he wanted to.
As a result, the opener played some crisp backfoot punches standing tall in the crease, he drove the ball when it was full and up there, cut it when short and in the range. The short balls were pulled and he even played a really late uppercut to beat the third man fielder as the ball raced to the boundary.
He needed 82 balls to get to his hundred which is in line with his character. Rohit takes time to build his innings and punishes the bowlers as he spends more time in the middle. He hit 12 boundaries and four sixes on his way to the hundred which is his 18th in ODIs and 16th as an opener.
