Mumbai Indians took on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Visiting skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first on a batting track. Kolkata played Kuldeep Yadav in place of Umesh while MI brought in Parthiv Patel, Tim Southee, and Jagadeesha Suchith.
Mumbai began well after getting KKR opener Robin Uthappa early. However, skipper Gautam Gambhir’s elegant 64 (52) and Manish Pandey’s splendid innings of 52 runs from 29 balls set them up nicely for a big total. They built up a fantastic partnership for the Knight Riders with some well-paced batting.
To finish things up Andre Russell then smashed 36 runs off 17 balls as KKR looked in a good position to score 200. However, Mumbai Indians bowlers came back well and restricted them to 187/5 in 20 overs. Mitchell McClenaghan was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets off 25 runs.
Mumbai Indians began well with Parthiv and Rohit providing a stupendous start. They once again had Hardik Pandya at number 3 but he failed to up the ante and soon perished. MI management the sprung another surprise as McClenaghan walked in at No.4. He slammed 20 off 8 balls with 3 sixes and eased the required rate a bit.
Later, Jos Buttler showed his significance with a 22-ball 41 runs knock. Rohit Sharma provided the finishing touches as he was adjudged the man of the match for his swashbuckling 84 runs from just 54 balls. Mumbai Indians registered their first victory in this year’s IPL as they chased down the KKR total with 6 wickets in hand.
It was probably the first entertaining game of this year’s IPL. Here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the MI KKR game.
It was Ricky Ponting's idea to send in @Mitch_Savage. It worked for us today, we pressed the button at the right time: Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma faced 2 more balls than Gambhir and scored 20 more runs.
That’s possibly the game.

Takes a brave man to interview angry Gambhir right after a loss. #IPL

Great to see that Jos has arrived at the IPL, but he can do so much more than that. Best white ball batsman England has ever had #GOAT

Fine win for Mumbai. I've saved accolades for @ImRo45 for the last. Superbly controlled, living up to the responsibility. Captain's knock!

Great to see Andre Russell finish games with not just the bat#KKRvMI

Russell bowls the ideal length and the right pace to be smashed at the death. Game after game. Fantastic hitter, ordinary bowler.

Uthappa and McC destroyed Kuldeep's bowling figures.

Gambhir's new stance is working beautifully…opponents should learn quickly. Don't have mid-on/mid-off for him vs pace. #KKRvMI

Manish Pandey scored more runs in this match than Dhawan and Raina did in the whole WT20. #KKRvMI
