Team India was out chasing a mediocre total against the Bangladeshi team in the semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2017. 264 wasn’t something that would test their batting unit which starts with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and then there is Virat Kohli. If the Bangladesh supporters thought they still had a chance to win, the game didn’t go beyond the trio.
The openers added 87 runs together with Dhawan starting off as the aggressor. They didn’t let the Bangladeshi bowlers settle into the line and lengths they would have liked to. Rohit took his time in the middle and then the shots were flowing. Backing his ability to race up the pace of the knock he played the ball on merit.
Dhawan who looked good for another half century got out for 46. Rohit carried on then on with skipper Virat Kohli for company. It was light work thereafter. The bowlers posed no challenge whatsoever and Kohli though new at the crease was at ease. He soon got to his 32nd half century and concentrated hard to continue going. He had scores of 91 and 78 in the first two matches of the tournament and after the 12 against South Africa came back hard.
Rohit’s shots were a pleasure to the eye and the fans relished it as much as the opposition looked helpless. He was soon in the reckoning for his 11th ODI century. Kohli in the meantime also recorded his half century. The Indian skipper played some classy shots through the off-side and whipped the bowlers all to the boundary at will.
He got to his hundred towards the end of the chase as Team India cruised towards a win. Rohit and Virat were toying with the Bangladeshi attack towards the end and their 178 run unbeaten partnership took the team home with almost 10 overs to play and 9 wickets in hand. Rohit stayed unbeaten on 123 with 15 boundaries and a six while Virat ended just 4 short of a hundred.
Here is how Twitterati reacted to Rohit the Hitman’s hundred
Rohit Sharma is the 22nd player to hit 200 sixes in Internationals. Only Shahid Afridi (214) has taken fewer inns than Rohit (242). #CT17
