Twitter Reactions: Rohit Sharma torments Bangladesh with a thunderous century in Birmingham
This was Rohit's fourth hundred of the tournament and is now the highest run-getter.
Rohit Sharma has been in stupendous form in this edition of the World Cup. The Nagpur-born batsman has racked up runs with sheer authority and very few bowlers have been able to halt his surge. After centuries versus South Africa, Pakistan and England, the 32-year-old cricketer has now notched his fourth ton of the tournament against Bangladesh at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
On an excellent batting wicket, India didn’t hesitate to bat first. Rohit opened the batting along with KL Rahul and looked a tad cautious at the start of the innings. However, in the fourth over, he got a massive lifeline. Mustafizur Rahman has given Bangladesh breakthroughs in a number of instances, and he was about to give his team that once again, but fate had something cruel in store for the pacer.
He hurried Rohit with a short-pitched delivery and the batter mistimed a pull shot. Rohit generally connects the pull to perfection, but this time around, he didn’t quite find the middle of the bat. The leather went up in the air towards deep mid-wicket where Tamim Iqbal, playing his 200th ODI, circled under it. Unfortunately, much to his despair, the fielder couldn’t latch on the ball despite getting both hands.
Tamim Iqbal’s drop-catch costs Bangladesh
At that point in time, Rohit hadn;t even crossed the double-digit mark. The dropped chance turned out to be a costly one for the Tigers as he pressed the accelerator and got to his half-century off 45 balls. Rohit and Rahul’s century partnership was also raised in 105 balls as India went from strength to strength in the game. Meanwhile, Bangladesh bowlers looked at bay and were filled with agony.
On the last ball of the 29th over, Rohit creamed the ball through the covers off Shakib Al Hasan to accomplish his century off 90 balls. Furthermore, Rohit became the leading run-scorer of the World Cup, surpassing David Warner, en-route the awe-inspiring knock in Birmingham. However, the experienced campaigner fell prey to part-timer Soumya Sarkar in the very next over after hitting a boundary.
