Joe Root and Dawid Malan had showed a great amount of resilience to make sure that Australia had to fight hard in the last two sessions of the third day’s play of the opening Ashes Test. However, the hosts were back to their very best in the first session of Day four. In the end, Pat Cummins and Co. secured a nine-wicket win at The Gabba, Brisbane. Most crucially, they took a 1-0 lead in the series.
Malan and Root had given the Brits some hope that they could save the Test. The duo reduced the trail to 58 and England had a chance to set Australia a formidable target. Their unbeaten 159-run stand for the third wicket made the visitors believe that a draw is on the cards if not a win. But they couldn’t carry on with their impressive run on Day 4 as they both perished in a space of 37 balls.
All too easy for Australia
Nathan Lyon struck first blood on Day four, getting rid of Malan, who scored 82 with the help of 10 fours. Less than three overs later, Cameron Green accounted for Root’s wicket. After a nine-ball duck in the first innings, the Brits’ skipper made 89, laced with 10 fours. England lost their last eight wickets for 74 runs. Jos Buttler promised with 23, but fast bowler Josh Hazlewood removed him.
Chris Woakes scored 16 and became Green’s second victim. Lyon was the wrecker-in-chief as he picked up four crucial wickets. The off-spinner got rid of Malan, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson and Mark Wood. Ben Stokes couldn’t make an impact in the first innings and he fell cheaply second time around as well. Cummins induced a false stroke from him and Green took an easy catch.
From 223 for two, England were shot out for 297 in a space of less than 30 overs. From there on, the target of 20 was a mere formality for the Aussies. Alex Carey and Marcus Harris opened the batting, but Robinson pinned the former to give the Three Lions some joy. However, the left-handed Harris hit one four, stayed unbeaten on nine and helped Australia register the comprehensive win.

A familiar scene in #Test #cricket – #England's batting crumbling, after showing a little promise, against #Australia.
Pat Cummins' captaincy stint starts with a superb win. #TheAshes #Ashes #Gabba #AUSvENG #BrisbaneTest #CricketAustralia— Hari Kishore Malladi (@journomalladi) December 11, 2021

The fact the half hour we batted most comfortably tonight wasn’t actually shown on TV (in 2021!) probably summed up that first test; few bright sparks but overall just a bit of a shambles #ashes #Ashes2021 #AUSvENG
