It was a happy homecoming for the Chennai Super Kings at the Chepauk. The returning franchise hosted the Kolkata Knight Riders in their first home game of the season. The Men in Yellow played at the iconic venue in Chennai after two years. Hence, the build up and the buzz around the game was immense. The fans flocked in large numbers and they were treated with a total run feast.
Over 400 runs were scored in the game and the hosts eventually sealed the game. Chasing 202 to win, it was the quick 23-ball 56 from Sam Billings that changed the course of the game. Towards the end, Ravindra Jadeja creamed a six to finish things off in style and complete a 5 wicket win for the Chennai Super Kings.
Earlier in the game, MS Dhoni had won the toss and had opted to field first. His move worked very well for the hosts as the KKR openers could not get going on the day despite brisk starts. The wickets of the middle-order also fell in cluster to reduce the KKR scoreline to just 89/5 at the half way stage in the innings. The onus was on KKR skipper Dinesh Karthik and the overseas recruit Andre Russell to rebuild the innings.
While Karthik played the calm head knock, it was Russell who launched in to the CSK bowling. Russell took his time to settle in before taking the attack to the CSK bowlers. Karthik and Russell added 76 off just 46 deliveries for the sixth wicket before Shane Watson dismissed Karthik in the 18th over on 26 (25). The Russell was not done just yet and he tore apart the bowling figures of Dwayne Bravo, who ended up conceding 50 runs in 3 overs. Russell finished the innings with a six and remained unbeaten on 88 off just 36 deliveries with a four 11 towering maximums.
In the run chase, Chennai Super Kings got off to a flying start with openers, Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu, adding 75 runs in the powerplay. Watson’s quick 42 came off just 19 deliveries. Rayudu aslo scored a brisk 39 of 26 deliveries. Later, MS Dhoni and Sam Billings stitched a handy partnership to take the chase forward. While Dhoni’s 25 took 28 balls, Billings played a whirlwind knock of 56 (23). He was dismissed in the penultimate over and it was down to Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja to cap off the game.

Chasing when winning the toss is becoming both more common and more successful. T20 has a problem and may need to consider radical options- teams who loses the toss allowed to make 1 change; or even, perhaps, sealed bids to decide the toss

The trend continues.. !
Win the toss, elect to field and chase down the target – all 5 matches! #CSKvKKR #IPL2018

Once again Dhoni proved, as long as team is winning, you can stay in the team regardless of your performance.

Dinesh Karthik did what any good captain would. Backed his senior bowler but was let down again. Hope at least now @KKRiders look at Nagarkoti or Mavi.
