Rolled over. There would hardly be a better way to describe Sydney Sixers’ loss against the Perth Scorchers in the 30th encounter of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2020-21. After inserting the Scorchers to bat, Daniel Hughes’ men lacked the bite with the ball and were deservedly taken to a task by the opponent batsmen. The Sixers tried as many as seven bowlers, but barring Steve O’Keefe and Lloyd Pope, who both bagged a couple each, none other could do much.

Steve O’Keefe was quick to strike as he got Liam Livingstone (16 from 13) caught by Jordan Silk close to the ring, as the batsman was trying to clear the fielder. Jason Roy, who has not been too flowy of late, struggled yet again to find his rhythm, although Colin Munro, who slammed four boundaries and a couple of sixes in his dazzling half-century (50 from 34), ensured that the innings did not stagnate. Having added 65 from 49 for the second wicket with Roy, Munro holed out to Bird at square leg, as he failed to elevate a Lloyd Pope delivery, bowled onto his pads enough.

Marsh’s fierce knock guides Scorchers to 183

Pope struck soon again as Jason Roy (27 from 32), who struggled to find timing for almost his entire knock, mistimed a slog sweep, which went straight to Jack Edwards. At 99 for 3, after 14 overs, the Scorchers would not have been eyeing 183, however, Mitchell Marsh (57 from 27) entered with different plans.

He barely took any time before setting the Perth stadium on fire and the two-over period between 15 and 17 fetched them 30 runs. Marsh raced off to his 50 in just 25 balls, striking 6 fours and a couple of sixes, and his 57-run stand with Josh Inglis, who scored 20 off 12, guided the Scorchers to 183 for 4.

Jhye-Tye’s havoc with the ball crushes Sixers

The Sixers allowed the scoreboard pressure to get the better of them as they lost Josh Phillippe (5 from 6) and James Vince (0 from 3) within the first three overs of their response. Jack Edwards, who scored 44 from 38, survived for some duration as he added 34 alongside Daniel Hughes, although once the latter deposited Andrew Tye’s back-of-a-length delivery to the Roy fielding at point, the panic button was pressed. The combined contribution of Jordan Silk, Daniel Christian, and Carlos Brathwaite was merely 2 runs, and not only them but no batsman stood up to take Sixers even close to the target.

Andrew Tye and Jhye Richardson wreaked havoc in tandem as they shared 7 wickets between them in 7.4 overs, giving away merely 35 runs. Chasing a target above 9 runs an over, the continuous tumbling of wickets – Sixers lost their last 7 for 53, and lack of momentum did little help to the number one-ranked team, who tumbled out for 97, losing the game by a whopping margin of 86 runs.

The Perth Scorchers have come from behind after four successive defeats to slam their third consecutive victory on the trot, whereas despite the major upheaval, Sixers continue to occupy the top spot with five wins in eight matches.
