Twitter Reactions: Scott Boland’s magical spell hands England crushing defeat in Boxing Day Test
It took the Aussies only 12.4 overs on Day three to pick up three remaining six wickets in England's second innings.
Australia have managed to seal the fate of the ongoing Ashes after they crushed England by an innings and 14 runs in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. On Day three of the third Test, it took the hosts only 12.4 overs to seal the deal. As far as the Brits are concerned, having already fallen 0-3 down in the series, they have nothing but pride to play for in the last two Tests.
England crumble
After the bowlers did a reasonable job on Day two, their batters faltered. Mitchell Starc picked up Zak Crawley and Dawid Malan off consecutive deliveries and almost pinned Joe Root with his hat-trick ball. Thereafter, Scott Boland piled on more misery for the Three Lions, getting rid of opener Haseeb Hameed and night-watchman Jack Leach. The visitors found themselves in all sorts of trouble.
Going into the third day’s play, England were trailing by 51 runs with six wickets left in their second innings. However, their batters failed to put up any sort of fight and surrendered meekly. Ben Stokes and Root, the two overnight batters, had a massive task of bailing the Brits out of jail. Starc spoiled their party and got rid of Stokes, who was starting to look ominous, having hit two fours.
Boland comes to the party
From there on, Boland came to the party and ran through the English batting lineup. The speedster, who made his Test debut in the game, finished with bowling figures of 4-1-7-6. He got rid of Jonny Bairstow, Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson and skipper Root within a blink of an eye. Root fought hard with a 28-run knock off 59 balls with four fours and stayed in the middle for 101 minutes.
Cameron Green dismissed James Anderson in the 28th over to bring the curtains down on the game. The Three Lions were bowled out for a mere 68 in 27.4 overs. Pat Cummins couldn’t pick up a wicket, but made sure that he kept things tight at one end. Nathan Lyon, Australia’s lone spinner, didn’t get to bowl amidst the dominating performance from the Aussie pacers.
