With Trinbago Knight Riders and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots already qualified for the playoffs and St Lucia Stars out of the race, three teams, namely- Jamaica Tallawahs, Barbados Tridents and Guyana Amazon Warriors are fighting for the two spots. One defeat from here on can prove very costly and the three teams can ill-afford to lose a point. The Warriors faced the bottom-dwellers Stars on Tuesday (according to Windian time) here at their home, Providence Stadium in Guyana.
Winning the toss, Guptill decided to let the away team bat first. What followed was a total batting collapse of the already dismantled team led by Shane Watson, as they could only reach the mere 100-run mark in 20 overs. The opening partnership failed for the umpteenth time as Fletcher and Watson were dismissed in quick succession. Jesse Ryder and Johnson Charles tried to consolidate the innings, but in their attempt, they went into Test cricket mode.
After their dismissal, the rest of the lot, including captain Sammy, chipped in with some contributions but the Test mode prevailed in every batter’s mind. 100 was never a tough target to chase, but the Stars began superbly by picking up the wicket of Chadwick Walton on the very first ball. Guptill also couldn’t hang in the middle for long, but Pakistani all-rounder Sohail Tanvir and Jason Mohammed slammed their way through. While the former scored 38 runs in just 29 balls, Mohammed contributed with 42 from 35.
Tanvir was dismissed, Jason remained unbeaten until the end of the innings. He, alongside partner Gajanand Singh, chased down the target comfortably with more than 5 overs to spare. On the bowling front, Afghan sensation Rashid Khan was the most impressive, picking up a couple of wickets and giving away just 19 runs. With this big win, not only did the Warriors gain advantage in terms of points, but also attained a healthy net run rate, which might prove vital in the end.
