Delhi Daredevils (DD) and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) were involved in a thrilling encounter at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. The game turned out to be a roller-coaster ride for both the teams. From a position of strength, the Capitals, led by Shreyas Iyer, slumped and lost the encounter by 14 runs. With the triumph, Ravi Ashwin’s men also moved to the second position of the table in this edition’s IPL.
Punjab post a competitive score
The Capitals won the toss and elected to field first, after which they restricted the hosts to 166 for the loss of nine wickets. KL Rahul looked dangerous, but Chris Morris trapped him plumb in front after he scored an 11-ball 15. Sam Curran smacked Avesh Khan for three fours and then hit a six off Sandeep Lamichanne. However, Lamichanne dismissed him in the fourth over. Curran scored 20 from 10 balls.
Mayank Agarwal succumbed to a horrendous run-out. Thereafter Sarfaraz Khan and David Miller took charge and cobbled together a stand of 62 runs. Sarfaraz fell prey to Lamichhane after scoring 39 from 29 with six fours. Miller was looking ominous and racked up 43 runs with four fours and two sixes. Quite a few wickets fell in the last few overs, but Mandeep Singh’s 21-ball 29 took KXIP to respectability.
Curran steals the show
Delhi started their run-chase on a horrendous note as Ravi Ashwin sent Prithvi Shaw packing for a golden duck. Then it was the turn of Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer to take charge and they added 61 runs for the second wicket. Hardus Viljoen rattled Iyer’s woodwork to give Punjab the much-needed breakthrough. Iyer got out for 28. Ashwin got his second wicket as he dismissed Dhawan for 30 runs.
The onus was on Colin Ingram and Rishabh Pant to get the visiting team over the finishing line. Pant perished for 39 and Ashwin’s direct-hit accounted for Chris Morris’ wicket. Ingram got out after a 29-ball 38. Thereafter, Delhi suffered a massive collapse and were bowled out for 152. Sam Curran picked up a hat-trick to shell-shock the visiting team. Mohammed Shami also picked up two crucial wickets.

Great illustration today of why set batsmen must finish the game. This is an epic collapse from Delhi Capitals.
