In the 25th match of the Caribbean Premier League, the Barbados Tridents hosted the Guyana Amazon Warriors at Bridgetown. Having won the toss the local skipper Kieran Pollard decided to bowl first. They were able to restrict the Warriors to 158/8 which is a mediocre total by standards of the competition and quality of opposition. But the second half panned out horrific for the home team as Sohail Tanvir returned with unbelievable figures of 5/3 to bowl out the opposition for just 59.
Guyana once again decided to stick to their pinch hitting opening combination with Tanvir partnering Chadwick Walton. Tanvir could only add 7 to the board and though Walton got a start couldn’t add more than 20 runs to the team total. There was a phase of dominance for them thereafter as Luke Ronchi and Jason Mohammed smoked the ball around. While the New Zealander scored 24 from 13, Mohammed’s contribution was 42.
The twenties from AB Fudadin and RS Primus got them over 150 which looked like a score of respect at the half way mark only for it to prove more than twice they would’ve actually needed to register a big win. For Tridents pacer Ravi Rampaul and left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein picked up a couple of wickets each.
The second innings was just about one man Pakistan’s unorthodox medium pacer Sohail Tanvir. He opened the bowling and cut through the Tridents batting line-up. On the last ball of the initial over of the chase, he booked a return for Kesrick Williams, in his next he had Darren Smith. He had the ball in his hand for the 5th over and as he trapped Eoin Morgan leg-before it was the 4th wicket as Keemo Paul had picked up Imran Khan in the interim.
At this point a lot was expected from skipper Pollard and he could, of course, do it given the target wasn’t huge but all he managed was to add another duck to his tally edging one from Tanvir back to the keeper.
The wrong-footed pacer ended his 4-over spell with scintillating figures of 4-1-3-5. And Barbados were wrapped up for a meagre 59 runs in 13.4 overs. What that also does is keeps Amazon alive in the race for the playoffs.
