Bangladesh are fighting it out against India in a steep chase at Edgbaston. They got off to a decent start but were pegged back with Tamim Iqbal getting out at a wrong time. The Tigers are in a must-win situation and one can see the desperation to win the match the way they’ve approached the chase. Even India would love to seal their position in the knockouts and won’t want to leave it till the last match. The intensity is right up there from both the teams and again like it is every time, there was a controversial decision taken by the third umpire which went against India this time.
The incident took place in the 12th over of the second innings when Mohammed Shami nipped one back to pin Soumya Sarkar in front of the stumps. The vociferous appeal followed from the Men in Blue only for Marais Erasmus to turn it down. Moreover, Virat Kohli didn’t have MS Dhoni to confirm as well but after pondering for a long time, he went for the review in the end. The replays showed that the bat was close to the pad and it was unsure whether the ball grazed the inside edge.
The third umpire Aleem Dar had several looks and even used a split screen. But he found it difficult to come to the conclusion and told Erasmus to stay with his original decision. It literally looked plumb on hitting and only because the umpire didn’t conclusive evidence, he turned down the appeal which led to India losing the review.
Kohli has animated discussion
Virat Kohli, the Indian captain, was baffled with the decision and was quick to have a discussion with the on-field umpire. Moreover, he wasn’t happy with India losing the review after the third umpire being inconclusive. But the decision was made and India had to move on. It was also an important wicket as Sarkar was looking dangerous.
Even the Twitterati wasn’t impressed with the decision and questioned the third umpire for turning the appeal down. To add to India’s agony, the hawk-eye showed it to be umpire’s call which would’ve saved India a review at least. Eventually though Sarkar was dismissed in the 16th over and Kohli didn’t forget to give him a small sendoff as well.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the decision:
Tech is one thing, where are the umpire’s instincts#IndvBan

If you’re unsure about the edge, at least allow us to retain the review #INDvBAN

This is one of the strange things about lbw reviews. Why doesn’t the third umpire ask the on-field one why it was not out? What if the on-field umpire ruled it not out because he thought it was sliding down, and not because he thought there’s an inside edge? #INDvBAN #CWC19

The third umpire should ask on field if he was thinking about the edge

Kohli marches over to the umpires after that DRS decision. Gesticulates, then hands on hips. Not a good look.

Kohli set to be fined again probably!

Once again, the #ShakibAlHasan decision brings out a strong reason for #HotSpot to be used. #IndiaVsBangladesh #BANvIND #CWC2019 #CWCUP2019 #CWC

Why do you loose a review if the 3rd umpire doesn’t have clear evidence to rule the decision?
It’s not out, understood. Why a loss of review? ????@ICC #BANvIND #INDvBAN #CWC19— Kautuk Haria (@KautukHaria) July 2, 2019
This time the third umpire spend little more time in making the decision but against India’s favor.#BANvIND #CWC2019

Didn’t the 3rd umpire say that there wasn’t any conclusive evidence to overturne the on field decision? In that case, isn’t it Umpire’s call? Why did India lose a review then? @bhogleharsha @sanjaymanjrekar#IndiaVsBangladesh #BANvIND #ICCCricketWorldCup #WorldCup2019

If the third umpire is of mind that the visuals are inconclusive and stay with onfield umpire then why team looses the review.. this is too much from icc..Frustrating. better remove DRS only.. also umpiring standards are at all time low..@ICC #cwc19 #teamindia #banvind #indvban

Bizzare umpiring. Period.#BANvIND #CWC19
— Manoj Soni (@manoj_insane) July 2, 2019
Since there was no conclusive evidence, the better decision would have been to go with the umpire’s call of not out and letting India retain the review. #BANvIND

Should a team lose a review on something like that? #INDVBAN #BANvIND #CWC19
— LGD (@LGD_Cricket) July 2, 2019
Common sense and the @ICC have never gone together. In cases like this, where the third umpire is unsure about the Ultraedge, ask the on-field umpire if he gave it out based on line & length or if he thought it was bat first. And then take that as umpire’s call. #BANvIND #CWC19

Unfortunately #TeamIndia ends up on the wrong side of the #DRS, most of the times. #BANvIND #CWC19

For no “conclusive decision” review should be retained. @ICC #CWC19 #BANvIND
