The Centurion crowd witnessed the hosts pull off a sensational whitewash in the five-match ODI series. In yet another action packed day, South Africa managed to pull off a spectacular victory. In what was a monumental effort by the batsmen, the Proteas won the final ODI and also went on to pip Australia to become the No.1 ranked team.
Earlier in the day, it was Upul Tharanga who won the toss as the visitors elected to field first. Proteas didn’t mind taking up the bat as they cruised to a magnificent opening stand. Quinton De Kock and Hashim Amla combined for an 187 run partnership for the opening wicket.
While de Kock scored a splendid 109 runs from just 87 balls, Hashim Amla displayed his valour with an excellent 154(134). A knock that comprised of 15 boundaries and 5 maximums. Du Plessis and Farhan Behardien also made fine contributions as South Africa managed to put up a total of 384/6 in their quota of 50 overs.
Suranga Lakmal picked 3 wickets but was quite expensive conceding 71 runs in 10 overs. Madushanka also picked up a couple of wickets but was taken to the cleaners by the Proteas batsmen. A target of 385 for a team already on low confidence was never going to be easy.

Sri Lanka didn’t have a great start as captain Tharanga was back to the pavilion by the fourth over. Things never fell in place for the Sri Lankan batting lineup as wickets kept tumbling one after the other. Eventually, Sri Lanka were reduced to 82/5.
At one stage it seemed, Sri Lanka wouldn’t even cross 200. However, some brilliant batting by Gunaratne who went on to score his first century helped Sri Lanka put some bold face in defeat. Pathirana also made a half century.
However, the required rate was too high and Sri Lankans failed to even come any closer. They could manage only 296/8 in their 50 over, thus losing the game by 88 runs. Chris Morris was the star from the bowling lineup as he had amazing bowling figures of 4/31.
Twitter sounded quite disappointed at the way Sri Lanka expressed themselves throughout the series. While there were praises sung for the South African camp, the visitors were trolled for a horrible campaign. Here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game:

Can't understand why Sri Lanka has given a chance to make 400 for RSA? Are they playing to improve RSA batsmen record? #SLVSA #SAvSL
