Twitter Reactions: South Africa comprehensively beat Australia in all the three departments
The South Africa vs Australia ODI series is all going the host’s way as they defeated the Aussies by a 142–run margin in the 2nd ODI of the 5-match series. While they were overwhelmed by Quinton de Kock’s sizzling 178-run knock in the opening game as he helped his team chase down 295 runs in a matter of 36.2 overs in this particular match stand-in skipper Faf du Plessis scored a hundred to take the team total to 361 which proved unscalable for the Aussies.
Earlier in the match Australian skipper Steve Smith had won the toss and decided to bowl first. The Protea openers de Kock and Rilee Rossouw put together a 70 runs opening stand, Australia had Quinton for 22 but that didn’t block any damage as Rossouw continued to play his shots and found a complementing partner in du Plessis. The duo added another 76 runs together to set them up for a big one.
Under fire JP Duminy joined Faf and the two made most of the platform setup. Du Plessis got to his century and ended with 111 runs whereas Duminy was dismissed for 82. The lower order contributed as well and took the score well beyond Australia’s reach. The pick of the bowlers for Australia was John Hastings who scalped 3 wickets.
In their bowling inning, the South African bowlers managed early breakthroughs with the wickets of Aaron Finch, Smith and George Bailey in the first 11 overs. David Warner stood his ground and scored a half ton and so did Mitchell March but nobody else had anything substantial to contribute as the Proteas picked regular wickets. For South Africa it was Wayne Parnell who dismissed 3 Aussie batsmen to lead the bowling charge.
Chasing a total as big as that they needed one of their top batsmen to bat through and others to play around him, nothing of that sort happened and the result could well be predicted before it eventually happened.
