Late wickets in the dying stages of the second day pushed Bangladesh on the backfoot. However, they made a stupendous comeback and managed to win the opening Test against Windies at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong by 65 runs courtesy of the spinners. Moreover, it was also the Tigers maiden Test triumph against the Caribbean team in their own den.
Bangladesh crumble further
With the overnight score at 55/5, the hosts didn’t have massive lead with them. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were the two overnight batsmen. Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel removed Mushfiqur for 18 to leave the Tigers in dire straits. Nevertheless, Mehidy Hasan and Mahmudullah put their heads down and cobbled together a valuable partnership of 37 runs.
Devendra Bishoo got rid of Mehidy to break the ominous-looking stand. Debutant Nayeem Hasan tried to hold one end up, but Bishoo accounted for his wicket in the 35th over. In the same over, the leg-spinner removed Mahmudullah to dash Bangladesh’s hopes of putting up a substantial lead. Roston Chase dismissed Taijul Islam and Windies were set a target of 190.
Caribbeans implode
The run-chase started on a horrendous note for the visiting team as they were reduced to 11/4 in the sixth over. While Shakib Al Hasan nipped out Kieran Powell and Shai Hope, the likes of skipper Kriagg Brathwaite and Roston Chase fell prey to Taijul’s guile and trajectory. Shimron Hetmyer threatened to take the bowling by the scruff of their necks and became Mehidy’s victim.
He scored 27 runs from 19 balls. Thereafter, by the 22nd over, the Windies were looking down the barrel at 75/8 with Jomel Warrican and Sunil Ambris in the middle. The duo showed fight and stitched together 63 runs. They were separated when Mehidy got the better of Warrican, who scored 41 runs. Taijul picked up Ambris’ wicket for 43 to pick up a sixfer and bring the curtains down on the match.
