The Barbados Tridents squared off against the hosts for the St Lucia Stars in the 24th match of the CPL. This was the last game for the St Lucia Stars in the league stages of the tournament. They ended the tournament with a six-wicket victory. However, with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots winning their game later in the day, both, Stars and Tridents, are now officially knocked out of the playoffs race.

The Tridents have lost all of their five home games this season. Further, the fans who wished to see Steve Smith and David Warner together in the same game ended up being disappointed as Steve Smith has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a side strain. Christopher Lamont, for his great bowling spell, was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’.

Tridents put up a deplorable score on the board

The Tridents were put into bat first by the Stars after the latter won the toss. For the first time in the last few games, the hosts didn’t tweak around much with their batting order. However, that didn’t work either as they put up a below-par total on the board yet again. Openers Dwayne Smith and Martin Guptill failed to deliver in this match as well. The duo scored 16 and 9 runs respectively.

Hashim Amla played the anchor in the innings and was looking good with a 35 off 34 balls before he was run out. None of the other batsmen could really get going to help the side post a decent total. They scored 135 runs in 20 overs after losing 5 wickets. Christopher Lamont was great with the ball and picked two wickets.

Warner ensures the Stars sail through

Unless they make the worst of the mistakes, this chase was always going to be an easy one for the visitors. The Tridents struck early in the game and sent both the openers back into the pavilion as the Stars were down to 24/2. While Andre Fletcher got out for 5 runs, Rahkeem Cornwall scored 18 runs. After the initial breakthrough, Chandrapaul Hemraj and David Warner together rebuilt well and stitched a decent partnership.

But Jason Holder brought his team back into the game by picking two wickets off consecutive deliveries in the 10th over. He dismissed both Hemraj and Kieron Pollard. Although the dismissal of the latter was a controversial one, the side was down to 80/4 nevertheless. At this stage, David Warner kept one end tight. He was unbeaten on 42 off 45 balls. Lendl Simmons did the job at the other end scoring 24 off 17 to help his side win the game by 6 wickets.

Twitterati was glad to see St Lucia Stars on the winning side. However, they didn’t seem to like the third umpire’s decision for Pollard’s wicket. The third umpire didn’t overturn the decision despite it being a clear no-ball from Jason Holder. Also, Pollard was way down the track to have been adjudged LBW.
