The match between Comilla Victorians and Sylhet Sixers in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) wasn’t short of stardust as Australian stalwarts Steve Smith and David Warner stepped out for the toss. After some riveting display of cricket, it was the Victorians who emerged victorious by four wickets in a jaw-dropping encounter, which went right down to the last ball, at Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium.

After winning the toss and opting to field, the Victorians did well to restrict the Sixers to 127 runs in 20 overs. Mahedi Hasan picked up Liton Das to strike first blood. Warner threatened with a 13-ball 14 with three fours but succumbed to a horrendous run-out. Youngster Afif Hossain promised, scoring 19 from 16 balls and he was nipped out by speedster Mohammad Saifuddin, who rattled Hossain’s woodwork.

Towhid Hridoy had a poor outing and he could only manage eight runs in 24 balls before being trapped plumb in front by veteran Shahid Afridi. However, from 56/5 in 11.3 overs, Nicholas Pooran and Alok Kapali cobbled together 55 runs. Pooran went on to score 41 from 26 balls with five fours and two sixes. For the Victorians, Hasan, Mohammad Shahid and Saifuddin got two wickets each while Afridi got one.

Comilla had their fair share of troubles during the run-chase. Fast bowler Al Amin Hossain accounted for Evin Lewis’ wicket in the third over. Imrul Kayes perished for a duck after being castled by left-arm speedster Mohammad Irfan. Tamim Iqbal and Steve Smith steadied the ship with a stand of 30 runs from 26 balls. Nevertheless, Al Amin removed Smith after the Aussie batsman scored 16 from 17 balls.

Shoaib Malik scored a laborious 13 runs from 20 balls and he was removed by Nepal leg-spinning sensation Sandeep Lamichhane. Anamul Haque became Lamichanne’s second victim. To Comilla Victorians’ agony, a brilliant direct-hit from Afif send Tamim, who scored 35 from 34, packing. Afridi went hammer and tongs, notched 39 from 25 balls with four fours and a couple of sixes to take his team over the line.
