Prior to their match against Chittagong Vikings at Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, Sylhet Sixers lost their first contest. But they managed to brush aside Mushfiqur Rahim’s Vikings in a humdinger by five wickets to register their first win of this edition’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). On the contrary, the Vikings couldn’t continue their winning momentum after defeating Comilla Victorians in the first match.
Warner and Pooran guide Sylhet
The Sixers won the toss and opted to bat first and they racked up 168 for five in 20 overs. They didn’t make a great start as Robbie Frylinck got rid of Liton Das for a two-ball duck. In the very next over, off-spinner Nayeem Hasan accounted for Nasir Hossain’s wicket. Frylinck inflicted further mayhem in the Sixers’ camp as he removed Sabbir Rahman for a duck and Sylhet were reduced to six for three.
However, skipper David Warner and youngster Afif Hossain put on 71 runs in 47 balls. Even as Warner went on to score 59 runs from 47 balls with a couple of fours and a six, Afif contributed with a handy 45 from 28 balls with five fours and three sixes. Nicholas Pooran churned out another masterclass with the willow and remained not out on 52 runs from 32 balls with three boundaries and as many sixes.
Taskin steps up
The run-chase didn’t start on a happy note for the Vikings as Taskin Ahmed got rid of Mohammad Shahzad in the first over. Nevertheless, Cameron Delport and the experienced Mohammad Ashraful cobbled together 57 runs in 40 balls to inject momentum into the innings. But both perished with a space of seven balls after scoring 38 and 22 runs respectively, and the Sixers were back in the game.
Skipper Mushfiqur couldn’t deliver and became Alok Kapali’s first victim. The likes of Sikander Raza and Frylinck tried their hearts out with knocks of 37 and 44 not out respectively, but their efforts went in vain. The Vikings needed 24 runs in the last over and Al Amin Hossain managed to defend it, albeit he went for 57 runs in his spell of four overs. Taskin was the Sixers’ standout bowler with four wickets.
