Twitter Reactions: Team India post a mammoth total, NZ start safely
The 2nd day of the India vs New Zealand 3rd Test was all about Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane and how beautifully they batted. Virat had got to his hundred yesterday and walked out with an intent to convert it into a big one today. Rahane too was in the perfect frame of mind as he left behind the problems he faced early on and played a more dominating knock today, coming down the wicket and hitting a six every now and then.
Virat got to his 150 right after the Lunch interval which was his 3rd 150 plus score; soon Ajinkya Rahane joined the skipper in the 100s. The duo batted freely after getting to the three figure mark and the New Zealand bowlers posed no trouble whatsoever. Kane Williamson tried all his bowlers the pacers, the spinners but it was just not happening. There was nothing for them off the surface as well and given the fact that Virat and Ajinkya were well set made matters worse.
The Indian Test skipper soon got to his second double ton in Tests in a matter of 8 Tests and Rahane completed his 150. Jeetan Patel finally found success as he had out lbw having scored 211. After a brief partnership with Rohit Sharma, his Mumbai teammate was dismissed caught behind by Trent Boult for 188. He missed out on a well deserved double ton and everybody including Mrs Rahane was disappointed.
Ravindra Jadeja joined Rohit and the message from the dressing room was clear to go for the shots. They took some time but then started to get the big shots going. Rohit scored 51 from 63 with 3 fours and 2 sixes. This is his 3rd fifty-plus score in the series. Jadeja at the other end, was unbeaten for 17 when the team total reached 557 in 169 overs and Kohli decided to declare with 9 overs remaining in the day.
The Indians started with the pace bowling duo of Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav for the first couple of overs but soon switched to see if the spinners could get a breakthrough. But with the ball hard and new, no real assistance from the pitch New Zealand opening pair of Martin Guptill and Tom Latham safely ended the day with 28 runs in 9 overs.
