After a disappointing end to the first ODI, the early showers suggested that the second match might have a similar fate. However, to the delight of the fans at the Queen’s Park Oval, the proceedings began with a reduced 43-over per side encounter. Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bowl on an overcast day at Trinidad.

India, picked things up in the second ODI from where they left, with a fantastic opening wicket partnership worth over a hundred runs to set up a solid platform for the inning. Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane, got off to the ideal starts before Dhawan rushed down the track only to find himself short of the crease when Shai Hope crashed the stump down.

Rahane and Virat Kohli continued to make merry while the Windies bowler struggled for consistency. It was not until India scored 211 runs, and Rahane scored a 103 off 104 balls that the second Indian wicket fell. He fell in the attempt to slog the ball to the leg side but failed to make contact with a straighter delivery from Miguel Cummins which merely shaved the right-hander’s off stump.

In the next nine overs that India batted, they added another 99 runs to set a target of 311 for the Windies to wind up in 43 overs, with scores of 87 from skipper Virat Kohli and some late slog from MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav.

Windies fail to get off to a good start

Windies, batting for the first time in the tour got off to the worst of starts that they could imagine with a wicket in the very first over of the innings. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar hit the length, with opener Kieran Powell falling for the ball outside the off stump. Jason Mohammed followed suit with a loose drive outside the off to hand the right-arm seamer his second wicket of the spell.

Shai Hope and Elvin Lewis’ partnership of 89 runs gave the hosts a glimmer of hope before a tidy piece of glovework from Dhoni saw the latter dismissed, the wicket was also the first for the chinaman Kuldeep Yadav. Playing only his second match Yadav struck again with the important wicket of the wicketkeeper-batsman Hope for 81, who was moving towards a situationally exceptional century.

Then on the Windies batting order could not keep up with the required rate, handing India a well-deserved victory by 105 runs. They set the record for most scores over 300 in the One-Day Internationals, surpassing Australia’s record of 95 300+ scores.

Twitter was ecstatic with India’s dominant victory over the host’s Windies at the Port of Spain to give them a 1-0 lead:
