Pakistan registered a hard-fought nine-run win over the Netherlands in the inconsequential third and final One Day International at  Hazelaarweg, Rotterdam, on Sunday, August 21, and by the virtue of this win, have sealed the series 3-0. However, it was not at all easy for the Men in Green by any means, as they were given a run for their money by a spirited Dutch side.

Pakistan might not have conceded a single game on this tour, but this bilateral series has indeed given the 1992 world champions a wake-up call on their over-reliance on pace spearhead Shaheen Afridi. While Afridi was rested for this series, it was a perfect opportunity for the other pacers to put their hands up and take the initiative of performing well, which did not happen.

The Netherlands make Pakistan earn their victory

The visiting captain Babar Azam called it right at the toss and elected to bat first. Even though the top-order batters failed to create any impact, it was Babar who single-handedly took care of his team’s brittle batting line-up once again as he held on firmly from one end.

The Pakistani skipper did consume too many balls to keep the scoreboard ticking. He missed out on his 18th ODI century when he was caught and bowled by Aryan Dutt for 91 runs off 125 deliveries in the 43rd over. However, the remaining batters did not do any justice to Babar’s vital knock as the team was skittled out for 206 with two balls to spare.

In reply, the hosts were reduced to 37/3 after 14 overs and looked in all sorts of trouble. Before the duo of opener Vikramjit Singh (50) and Tom Cooper added 71 runs for the fourth wicket. Singh’s dismissal opened up the floodgates for the Pakistani bowlers, but Cooper waged a lone battle from the other end.

At one point in time, it seemed as if Tom Cooper would take the Netherlands past the finish line before his unfortunate dismissal in the 46th over, as he went back scoring 62 runs off 105 balls. The remaining batters failed to get the job done as the Dutch were bundled out for 197 in the final over.
