The first four games had made it clear that the LPL was going to be a high scoring affair. With some of the great hitters from around the world and flat tracks to assist them, it was a nightmare for the bowlers. It was once again time for a power-packed match between the Dambulla Viiking and the Jaffna Stallions.
Dambulla won the toss and opted to bowl first. Having a strong top order, the Stallions would’ve hoped to get off to a good start. However, to their horror, the exact opposite happened. Some good bowling combined with some careless batting meant that they were at 40/4 at the end of the powerplay. The experienced Shoaib Malik was still at the crease and they would’ve wanted him to get them to a big score.
However, he too soon lost his wicket. At that point, it seemed like they would be dismissed for a below-par score and this might be an easy win for the Viiking. But that’s what T20 cricket is known for, It brings you the unexpected and Thisara Perera once again reminded us of this fact.
Thisara Perera single-handedly demolishes Viiking’s bowling line-up
Perera came in when the team was at 64/5 and he walked out unbeaten after taking his team to 218/7 at the end of 20 overs. His knock of 97* off just 44 balls included eight fours and seven sixes. He played a captain’s knock and out of nowhere took his team to a match-winning position. For the bowlers, it was definitely not a day to remember.
Stallions’ had set a stiff target of 219 runs and it needed some good batting to be chased down. However, they just never got going. Every time a player looked good he soon threw his wicket away. Apart from Samit Patel’s 41 and Dasun Shanka’s 35, there was no notable score.
Some brilliant bowling from the team meant that the Dambulla side was dismissed after scoring only 152 runs in 19.1 overs. They lost the match by a huge margin of 66 runs. Usman Shinwari took three wickets conceding only 16 runs in his four overs. Binura Fernando and Thisara Perera got a couple of wickets to their name. Perera was awarded the player of the match for his excellent performance with both bat and ball.
