Twitter Reactions: Tim Murtagh and Ireland send the Brits into a shell at the end of Day 1 at Lord’s
England still trails Ireland's score by 122 runs.
At the same place where they lifted the World Cup 2019 a few days ago, England witnessed one of its most embarrassing performance in a long, long time. In the one-off Test against Ireland, the Brits failed terribly with the bat and never have done so badly at home in the last few years. Ireland had to wait for a while to play a top team in the whites and they didn’t let the nerves get the better of them.
England won the toss and opted to bat first in this match only to face the wrath of Tim Murtagh. He got through the English top-order and never allowed them to recover. First, the likes of Rory Burns and Jason Roy were dismissed by him for 6 and 5 runs respectively.
Then, he even dismissed Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes – all for a duck. Mark Adair and Boyd Rankin also chipped in from the other end and picked up three and two wickets respectively. Joe Denly, with 23 runs, was the highest scorer in the innings. Sam Curran and Olly Stone added 18 and 19 runs respectively before England was bowled out for a paltry 85.
The Irish failed to capitalise and suffer a bad collapse
With a lot of time still left in the game, Ireland had the opportunity to slam the door on the Englishmen by gaining a big lead. They looked positive initially and were cruising along nicely. Andy Balbirnie registered the first fifty of this game before he got out for 55 runs. Paul Stirling put on a well-made 36. Kevin O’Brien looked good with an unbeaten 28 but ran out of partners due to the collapse.
Ireland lost the final six wickets for just 17 runs and was thus bowled out for 207. England batted for one over in their second innings and finished with a score of 0/0. They still trail Ireland’s score by 122 runs. Twitterati erupted in joy for Ireland after this unbelievable performance. Fans were all praise for Tim Murtagh, who became the first Ireland player to pick up a five-wicket haul. They also applauded Andrew Balbirnie.
