England had beaten New Zealand in the 5-match ODI series. Ben Stokes was returning to the five-day format after a long time. England’s last outing in the whites was forgetful as Australia had thumped them 4-1 in the Ashes series. The Eden Park was ready to host the English side for the day-night Test. After winning the toss, Kane Williamson opted to bowl first. Forget England, even he wouldn’t have thought what was going to happen.

Boult and Southee looked threatening in the first 4 overs, however, no wickets were lost, till then. Alastair Cook got an unplayable peach of a delivery from Trent Boult. Cook prods at the ball, only to edge it to the second slip. Joe Root, the English skipper promoted himself to number 3. Well, only to face 6 deliveries and then see his woodwork shattered by Trent Boult.

Thunderbolt’s from Boult too destructive

Boult’s carnage didn’t stop. Dawid Malan became his 3rd victim as England looked in a massive trouble. Ben Stokes was back. The much-awaited left-hander needed to put on a show to get his side out of the trouble. But, there was Boult. He had other plans for the left-hander one would say. He disturbed the off stump of Stokes, all Stokes managed was nothing. An 8-ball duck for Stokes meant that England were 18 for 5. Southee had joined the party as well when he removed Stoneman, the 4th wicket of England.

Unchanged bowlers bundle the whole side

Southee removed England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow and all-rounder Moeen Ali in consecutive overs while Boult picked up his fifer as he destroyed the stumps of Chris Woakes. England’s total was 23 for 8. The lowest in Test history was 26 by the Kiwis against the same opponent. New Zealand had the chance to take revenge and bundle the England side for less than 26.

However, a counter-attacking 33 of 25 balls from Craig Overton meant that England managed the scar and eventually went past 50. England bundled for 58 runs, their lowest against New Zealand as Boult removed James Anderson, making him his 6th victim of the noon.
