In the final match of the Chappell-Hadlee ODI series 2017, the coin flipped New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson’s way and he quickly elected to bat first on the Seddon Park wicket at Hamilton. Martin Guptill’s injury meant Tom Latham and Dean Brownlie opened the batting. While not a lot was expected from Brownlie who had 10 ODIs behind him but it was Latham who disappointed on the day as he handed Josh Hazlewood a catch off Mitchell Starc and returned with a duck.
Williamson had a good partnership for the second wicket with Brownlie but he perished on 37 while the opener continued and soon got to his half century. He found an able partner in senior pro Ross Taylor who was business from the moment he arrived at the crease. The duo added 100 runs for the third wicket partnership and placed the Black Caps in a strong position. It deteriorated quickly as both of them were dismissed by Australia’s limited-overs specialist James Faulkner in quick succession.
Another couple of wickets fell in a span of 4 runs from each other and from 176/2 at one stage New Zealand were 209/6. But Mitchell Santner once again displayed his batting abilities and along with Tim Southee gave his team a few more runs to play with and that took their total to 281/9 in 50 overs. Starc and Faulkner picked 3 wickets apiece while Hazlewood got 2 and Pat Cummins had a solitary success.
Aaron Finch was expected to give his team a head start with the bat. With Shaun Marsh at the other end things definitely looked good in 7 odd overs but soon Marsh was run out for 22 and Trent Boult didn’t let Peter Handscomb open his account before disturbing his wickets. Finch and Travis Head had a stabilizing partnership but both the batsmen were dismissed soon after their fifties on 56 and 53 respectively. Their problems aggravated when Glenn Maxwell was out for a duck.

Allrounder Marcus Stoinis added 42 but Santner removed him after Maxwell on 42 and at 198/7 the Aussies weren’t quite in the best position to accomplish the chase. Kiwi bowling spearhead Boult from the other end ran through the Australian lower-middle order and tail to not only register his career best bowling figures of 10-1-33-6 but also won the game for his team by a 24-run margin. With that the hosts bagged the series 2-0.
Here is how Twitter reacted to Trent Boult’s bowling and New Zealand’s series win:
7th successive ODI loss for Australia away from home – their joint-longest sequence. They had lost 7 away ODIs in a row in 1996 too.
