The mega finale of the Caribbean Premier League produced a low-scoring thriller as Trinbago Knight Riders prevailed to win the title for the second time. The game had all the ebbs and flows throughout and in the end, it was only one big over, 19th, when Kevon Cooper unfurled his muscular power to provide a decisive knockout punch over Patriots.
Knight Riders continued to win the toss and opted to bowl on a sluggish surface in the grand final at Brian Lara stadium in Trinidad. The man himself, the legendary Brian Lara was present to witness the game. Patriots got off to a worst possible start as Chris Gayle and Mohammad Hafeez went back to the dugout with only 11 runs on the board. Knight Riders bowlers kept building dot balls and the pressure got to Evin Lewis and Brandon King.
At 45/4 St. Kitts looked down and out but the lower middle order in Carlos Brathwaite and Devon Thomas made sure their side use their full quota of 20 overs. Jonathan Carter held one end as Mohammad Nabi finished off in style collecting 20 runs off the final overs which boosted Patriots’ score to 135/6. Trinbago were excellent with the ball in hand apart from that last over from Dwayne Bravo. Sunil Narine came to the party on the big night as he returned with magical figures of 4-1-8-1.
Thrilling Chase
Alike their opposition, the hosts too didn’t get off to a great start as Cottrell scalped Narine and Dwayne in second over of the chase with his searing swing bowling. Colin Munro, the hero of the last game, hit some lusty blows off Nabi. Hafeez and Tabraiz Shamsi though, strangled down the Knight Riders as they were reduced to 90/7. The onus was on the experienced Denesh Ramdin who kept his calm as Kevon Cooper strode out to the middle.
What followed was the carnage in the 19th over as Cooper just torn Hilfenhaus apart and scored 22 runs in the over. He hit the ball all over the park which put the bowler and under immense pressure and then it was only one team winning. Knight Riders had snatched the victory from the jaws of defeat courtesy the blast from Cooper and the calmness of Ramdin.
Twitterati erupted as Knight Riders pulled off a highly unlikely victory. They hailed both the teams for an excellent show in the tournament but sadly there could be only one winner in this game and Knight Riders held their nerve despite falling back in the chase and achieved the ultimate glory to put their hands on CPL trophy for the second time in 5 editions.
Here is how Twitterati reacted throughout the low scoring thriller:
