Twitter Reactions: Twin centuries from Jason Roy and Joe Root overpower Chris Gayle's comeback ton
Twitterati was elated to see over 700 runs being scored in the game.
After the misfortunes in the Test series, it was quite a fairy tale comeback for England in the ODIs. With a thumping win over the Windies, the visitors have announced themselves ahead of the World Cup 2019. The team registered its highest successful chase in ODI cricket courtesy twin centuries from Jason Roy and Joe Root.
These two men were brilliant on the night and lit up the Caribbean with their performances. Their brilliance ended up overpowering Chris Gayle’s century on his comeback. By registering a 6-wicket victory, England is 1-0 up in the five-match series.
A six feast as Chris Gayle lights up Barbados
Making his comeback into the Windies team after a while, Chris Gayle was on the money right away. After getting an early reprieve in the innings when he was dropped on 9 by Jason Roy, he was on fire. This wasn’t one of those innings where he blew the opposition apart with his big hitting ball after ball. His century came exactly off 100 balls and he perished after putting 135 runs on the board from 129 balls. Gayle, though, smashed 12 sixes in his innings and was very patient to wait for a bad ball come his way. 8 of these sixes were smashed out of the ground.
The 39-year-old’s 15th ODI century complemented by a well-made 64 from Shai Hope helped the hosts put up a massive total of 360 runs on the board. A total of 23 sixes were hit in the innings which is a record. The bowling from England was quite poor. Ben Stokes and Adil Rashid accounted for three wickets each.
Jason Roy provides a lightning start to England in the chase
While Windies seemed to have had the upper hand at the halfway mark, Jason Roy changed the equation within no time. He made up for the dropped catch of Gayle with a blistering century. Along with Jonny Bairstow, Roy put up 91 runs for the opening wicket before the former fell for 34. Then came a brilliant partnership along with Test skipper Joe Root. The duo added 114 runs and in the process, Jason Roy got to his century off just 65 balls.
He fell to Devendra Bishoo after putting on 123 runs off 85 balls. While Root played the anchor, skipper Eoin Morgan was the aggressor in the next partnership. Morgan scored a quickfire 65 while Root notched up his 14th ODI century. The latter was dismissed when the scores were level. Jos Buttler came in and finished the game with a boundary to seal a memorable win which came off just 48.4 overs. Windies dropped five catches in the innings which was quite pathetic.
Twitterati was elated to see over 700 runs being scored in the game. They thoroughly enjoyed Chris Gayle’s innings and the big sixes. Fans even congratulated him for surpassing Shahid Afridi as the man with most sixes in international cricket. Tweeple were spellbound watching the special knocks from Jason Roy and Joe Root.
