That was an unbelievable effort from the duo.

Courtesy an unbeaten 264 from Tom Latham, New Zealand were all over Sri Lanka on the third day. Furthermore, having picked the first three wickets with only 20 runs on the board, the Kiwis were already sniffing a victory. The plan would have been to bowl out the visitors and possibly win the match by an innings. However, Kusal Mendis and Angelo Mathews stood tall between a win for the hosts.
Going into bat at 20/3, the duo was absolutely relentless throughout the day. They hardly gave any chance to the Blackcaps bowlers and played some great cricket. They have taken the attack onto the bowlers and put their side in such a position from where it is tough to lose. Not a single wicket fell during the course of the fourth day and they have put together an unbeaten 246-run partnership thus far.
Back to back 50+ scores for Angelo Mathews
Kusal Mendis, after having missed out in the first innings, was just brilliant on the day. He was the first of the two to reach his century. He played some glorious shots in his innings which included 12 boundaries. At the close of play, he was unbeaten on 116 off 287 deliveries.
Both these batsmen showed some high discipline. They respected the good deliveries and punished the poor ones. Angelo Mathews missed out on his century in the first innings after having got out on 83. However, he made sure that he converted that into something substantial this time around.
Although he was slightly slow at the start, he got into the groove quickly to register his ninth Test century. At the end of the day, he even surpassed Mendis and was unbeaten on 117 off 291 deliveries. Twitterati couldn’t just believe this effort as a loss looked inevitable after Day three. It was all praise for this duo after these heroics. It will be interesting to see if the Kiwis make a comeback on the final day now.
Here is how Twitterati reacted:

Kusal Mendis & Angelo Mathews are the first pair to bat out an entire day's play after Graeme Smith & Neil McKenzie against Bangladesh in Chittagong (Day 1) in 2008. #NZvSL

What a day for @OfficialSLC. From 13/3 to 259/3, batting a day, in NZ, without giving away any wickets. A proud moment to cherish. And to see @Angelo69Mathews giving some hints for the selectors, that was priceless. #NZvSL
