Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli hit his first Test century against West Indies yesterday on the first day of the 1st Test. He came in when the team was almost in trouble two down for 70 odd runs but put up a superb partnership with opener Shikhar Dhawan to get India into a commanding position. Though he lost him towards the end of the day struck another solid partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin who was promoted ahead of Wriddhiman Saha and is probably seen as a reliable all-rounder by the team management.

Kohli carried on after the hundred and kept playing positive cricket and his shots. He was unbeaten on 143 at the end of the first day’s play with Ashwin for company and the scoreboard reading 302/4. Day 2 started on a similar note as the duo further strengthened their partnership and the team’s position. First the skipper got to his 150 and soon Ashwin also brought up his half-century.

Things were going beautifully and runs kept flowing out of Kohli’s bat. He played a flawless knock and didn’t give the Windies bowlers a single chance. Right at the stroke of Lunch he got to his double hundred and became the first Indian Test skipper to score a double ton overseas. It took Virat 281 balls to get to the historic mark. It is also the first double century in his first-class and Test career.

The Kohli-Ashwin partnership that is worth 168 runs has pushed India over 400 and they will now look to post a huge total to ensure they don’t need to bat again in this Test match. The entire team rose along with coach Anil Kumble and Sunil Gavaskar to applaud Virat’s remarkable achievement. Kumble also pulled out his camera to capture the special moment.
