MS Dhoni rescued Team India from a diabolical situation as he’s done so many time in the past. With India struggling to score off the West Indies bowlers, Dhoni stitched two crucial partnerships with Ajinkya Rahane and Kedar Jadhav and helped his side end up with a decent score of 251 runs on the board, with a trade mark last ball boundary to finish the innings.
Windies bowlers showed great character in the early stages of the innings which resulted in India losing their in form players Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan before the end of the first powerplay. Yuvraj Singh (39 off 55 balls) was looking well set for a big score but was rapped on the pads by Devendra Bishoo and the umpire had to put up his finger when the DRS showed he was hitting the stumps.
In came the calm Dhoni in the 37th over of the innings. He started off cautiously with the focus on rotating the strike with Rahane, who ensured one end was blocked with his rock solid approach. Dhoni received a lifeline when he was dropped at short-third, on 27 but he never looked back after that.
Cool, calm and determined
The former skipper had faced over 40 balls before the final 10 overs commenced but he was determined to stay till the end and take India to a decent total. Hence, he decided to not go after the debutant Kesrick Williams, who was mixing up his pace very well.
Rahane on 72 was sent back by Miguel Cummins, Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav took the onus upon themselves and the run-rate took an aerial flight. Whilst MSD’s innings was mostly about class and calmness, soaking the pressure and then turning on the heat. Jadhav, on the other hand, piled up some crucial runs in the end through some unorthodox, but effective stroke play.
Dhoni hit Jason Holder for a couple of big ones in the 47th over, barring that he showed no great urgency at any point of the game. The duo added a whopping 81 runs in just 46 balls, which is flabbergasting considering how difficult a wicket that was to bat on.
From a paltry 170/4 after 42 overs to finish with a score of 250 is indeed remarkable and the Indians will get into the dressing room with the momentum on their side. Dhoni with his 78 off 79 balls four boundaries with 2 sixes was the man who propelled India to a defendable total and Twitter was full of praises for his solid knock in the most adverse of situations one can come across.
