Virat Kohli smashed a brilliant 105-ball hundred to take India to a strong position in the 3rd ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India suffered an early blow yet again. But, it was Rohit Sharma who was dismissed prematurely today. This once again brought Virat Kohli to the crease early in the innings with a responsibility to anchor the innings.

Kohli batted with authority like he always does. Together with Dhawan, he put up a 119-run partnership. Dhawan was clean bowled by John Hasting in the 27th over and the partnership ended. Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli yet again partnered and shared another 109 runs stand to take India to a strong position.

The chants of Kohli! Kohli! intensified at the MCG when he hit a boundary off Kane Richardson’s bowling to race to 99 runs. He guided the next delivery for a single to reach his century and celebrated with his usual enthusiasm, leaping high and punching the air. Kohli continued in his aggressive batting after the century.

However, he couldn’t stay till the end of the innings as Hastings managed to deceive him with a slower one and got him caught by Bailey at extra cover. His century set the perfect platform for India for their third consecutive 300 plus total.

This century broke a couple of records. Virat became the fastest to 24 hundreds and also overtook AB de Villiers in the list of fastest to 7000 runs. India are currently 2-0 behind in the 5 match series  and this happened to be the last chance for them to save the series.

MS Dhoni played a quick-fire knock towards the end of the innings scoring 23 off 9, it gave India the last push they needed. 296 is what Australia need to chase, the second innings has a lot to watch out for.
