India won the toss and invited Shahid Afridi & Co. to bat first on a green wicket at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium where the pitch has been assisting pacers right through the Asia Cup. India played a 2 – pacer, 2 – spinners attack while they were forced to go in with a change as Shikhar Dhawan carried a niggle and Ajinkya Rahane walked in for him. Pakistan opted for a 4 pace attack.
Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah started off really well; both the openers Mohammad Hafeez and Sharjeel Khan had a tough time negotiating the early movement. Nehra got the first breakthrough as Hafeez edged one to Dhoni, Sharjeel soon followed the professor to the pavilion. Thereafter the dam was broken and wickets flooded on.
Kohli run Khurram Manzoor out and then Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal were out in quick succession. Shahid Afridi was run out by a superb Jadeja effort. The tail was soon cleaned up and Pakistan were bowled out for 83.
Indian fans thought they had the match in hand and considered it a walk in the park to chase 84 but Mohammad Amir ensured things weren’t so and bowled a fiery spell first up. He got both the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Rahane out in the first over of the inning and suddenly it didn’t look easy. Amir got the third in his second over as a tentative Suresh Raina was was caught for just 1.
Virat Kohli was still standing there holding the hopes of his team in his hands and he had Yuvraj Singh for company, Afridi decided to bowl out Amir who was the most likely to get him the wicket, though Mohammad Irfan bowled well but wasn’t lucky enough to get a wicket, Shami also bowled well but without success early on. Wahab Riaz was expected to make the ball talk but was hit for 15 in his first over and probably it was his over that decided the game in India’s favor.
Kohli played a masterclass knock with Yuvraj at the other end. The two worked out a 50-run partnership, which had the mark of Kohli all over it with superb cover drives. He was unlucky to get out on 49, but the job was almost done till then as India needed another 8 to win.
Dhoni walked out and did what he is known for, finished the game with a crashing four.
