It was a must-win encounter for both the teams at Raipur as Delhi Daredevils took on the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last league game of IPL 2016. While Delhi was renowned for their clinical all-around game, the Royal Challengers were prominent for their batting heroics.
It was Virat Kohli yet again who led from the front to steer his team to an emphatic victory. Not only did the victory seal the playoffs berth for RCB, but also got them to the 2nd spot in the points table, that now gives them 2 shots at securing the final berth. Captain fantastic rose to the occasion when it mattered and batted masterfully on a track that seemed to be a tough one for the batters.
Earlier in the day, Kohli had put Delhi Daredevils into bat first. Delhi’s opener Quinton de Kock played the anchor role and made a 52-ball 60, but wickets kept tumbling at the other end. No other batsman could provide any resistance and the RCB bowling, that had been under the scanner in the tournament, came out good when it mattered. Had it not been Chris Morris’s cameo of 27 off 18 balls, the Daredevils were staring at a very low score. They ended up with 138/8 in their 20 overs as Yuzvendra Chahal bagged 3/32 to be the pick of the bowlers and also the owner of the Purple Cap.
How did the match pan out? – IPL 9, Match 56 Review: Virat Kohli special powers RCB into the playoffs
The Royal Challengers Bangalore run chase was jolted early in the innings with Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers missing out on scoring runs. It was down to Kohli and KL Rahul to not just steady the ship but also keep the scorecard ticking. Rahul played exceptionally well for his 23-ball 38. But in the end, it was Virat Kohli’s 10th half century of the season that saw RCB home by 6 wickets. Kohli remained unbeaten on 54 off 45 balls with 6 fours.
