Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli had played four innings before this one in the series but hadn’t got a half century and there were murmurs that he is out of form. He scored a characteristic 45 in the Kolkata Test and that actually changed the momentum. The conditions were tough and the bowlers were on top but Virat decided to play his shots and score rather than just hanging around and letting the bowlers dominate the proceedings.

Ahead of the match he had said that there is nothing like form and he thinks he is batting well. Come the Indore Test and he absolutely shut everyone up with the way he batted. Virat walked in to bat when Gautam Gambhir was dismissed in the first session. He first got into a partnership with Cheteshwar Pujara but the Indian No. 3 was eventually dismissed for 41; in walked Ajinkya Rahane and I won’t say that he looked at his best to start with but hung in there and eventually got into his grooves.

Kohli on the other hand, appeared to be batting on a different wicket. He was brilliant right from the start, he ran hard didn’t rely just on the boundaries to fetch him the runs. But when he did hit the boundaries, they were beautiful. His inning oozed class and answered another question from the critics who claimed he didn’t have the temperament to get the big daddy hundreds. He got to his century on the 1st day carried on from there on day two and got to his 150 right after lunch, his 3rd 150 plus score in Tests.

The milestones in his knock came but he didn’t exult, he raised his bat, smiled and carried on. In the second session of the day the New Zealand bowlers were already starting to tire down, the spinners didn’t find enough support from the surface to trouble the batsmen and the pacers who bowled their hearts out in the morning session weren’t able to crack the partnership either.

A few overs ahead of the Tea break, Virat got to the triple figure mark for the second time in his knock. His second double century in Test cricket and both have come in a matter of 7 innings. With that he also became the only Indian Test skipper to have scored two double centuries.

He isn’t done as of yet and looks pretty solid to get a triple as well if India decide to continue batting. Rahane at the other end also went past the 150-run mark and at Tea is batting on 161*.
