The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have registered their biggest win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ever in the Indian Premier League (IPL). They defeated the three-time champions by 37 runs defended a total of 169 runs they had posted on the back of a brilliant 90* from their skipper Virat Kohli. This turned out to be the fourth win for RCB as they now have 8 points after playing six matches.
Earlier, RCB won the toss and Virat Kohli had no hesitations in batting first. But they didn’t start well with the opener Aaron Finch getting out early after a slow start. Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal then stitched a patient half-century stand. But the run-rate was hovering around six all the time. With the latter getting out for a 34-ball 33 and AB de Villiers bagging a duck, things got tough for the RCB skipper.
Shardul Thakur did the damage to leave the opposition gasping. Washington Sundar also couldn’t do much batting at five and scored only 10 runs. At the other end, Virat Kohli got settled into the middle and found an able partner in Shivam Dube. The duo got together at 93/4 in the 15th over and desperately needed a partnership to get going.
They took the team’s total to 117/4 after 17 overs with Kohli crossing the 50-run mark as well. From here on, what followed was a carnage. Virat Kohli took the attack to the opposition bowlers churning out 24 runs off Sam Curran‘s last over and then Shardul Thakur was also taken apart for 14 runs.
Kohli didn’t even spare CSK’s death overs specialist and scored 14 runs off the last over of the innings to finish on a competitive total of 169. They didn’t even look like scoring 150 at one stage but their skipper had other ideas who put on an exhibition of some classy batting. Kohli ended up unbeaten on 90 off 52 deliveries with four fours and as many sixes to his name. Rather Kohli ran as many as 50 runs between the wickets during his stay in the middle.
The Chase
The CSK openers Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson couldn’t start well for the team. The slow start meant they were once again behind the asking rate from the word go. After the first three overs went relatively quiet, both the batsmen tried to take on the off-spinner Washington Sundar. But ended up throwing their wickets to the same bowler. CSK were reeling at 26/2 after six overs and once again needed the middle-order to turn things around.
Ambati Rayudu and Narayan Jagadeesan, who replaced Kedar Jadhav in the XI, then joined hands together to rebuild the innings. But the partnership crawled to 64 runs in around nine overs which made things worse for CSK. The latter upped the ante but the required run-rate was too high and he eventually got run out in a strange way.
With 81 needed off 34 deliveries, MS Dhoni walked in and smashed Yuzvendra Chahal for a huge six as well. But he got out in the same over in trying to hit yet another maximum leaving CSK in the middle muddle. There was hope then for the hope as the required run-rate shot up. Rayudu was set but could never hit big shots and literally crawled his way to 42 off 40 deliveries.
CSK ended the innings on 135/8 in their 20 overs losing in yet another chase and they remain at the seventh position in the points table with only four points to their name after playing seven matches.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Absolutely no issues Dhoni playing like this. Went on the attack early, nailed one, missed the other. Tough luck!

Why do people troll a certain team?
1. Is it because they expected them to fail in the first place but their success proved them wrong?
2. Or is it because they love the team too much and are venting their frustration by trolling them? #IPL2020 #CSK #GenuineQuestion— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) October 10, 2020

Inexplicable innings from Ambati Rayudu. 42 off 40. 13 dots. Jagadeesan showed intent. Dhoni showed intent. Fair play to them. Didn't look like Rayudu did until it was very, very late. Why does at least one CSK batsman end up doing this every game? #CSKvsRCB #IPL2020

Getting beaten this badly by RCB is the lowest CSK have ever fallen. And that also includes the period when they were suspended. #CSKvRCB

Feel sad for Chennai fans.
This was a team that fought & teams used to be wary till the end. Have been very disappointing especially with d bat, leaving it for too late.
Kohli was extra special today. Many batsmen can learn how to not get bogged down, played only 5 dots#CSKvsRCB pic.twitter.com/9AKFBan6F0— Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) October 10, 2020
An excellent win for @RCBTweets! Completely outplayed CSK. Kohli took his time and CSK didn't see that acceleration well and gave away too many to be chased by a team which is too dodgy and inconsistent.

Brilliant performance from @RCBTweets to win this one and register their biggest win over CSK 👏#CSKvRCB
