Twitter Reactions: Warner and Renshaw ensure Australia a commanding position on Day 1
The last Test of the series – is an opportunity for Australia to complete a clean sweep; they haven’t had many such opportunities in the recent past – for Pakistan to of course, save their face; 3-0 isn’t a scoreline you would want to start the year with. At the SCG the coin flipped Steve Smith’s way and he was pretty certain they wanted to bat first.
When the skipper takes the decision to start the Test with the bat he expects his openers to give them a head start. Having a guy like David Warner to start the proceedings always helps. He was adventurous, rollicking and magnificent right from the onset of the game and carted the Pakistani pacers all around the Sydney Cricket Ground much to the joy of the spectators. His partner Matt Renshaw hadn’t got going yet in his Test career and this was a big game for him.
With Warner going berserk at one end, the job was much easier for the rookie; he let the big man do it his way and scored at every opportunity that came his way. The left-hander soon got to his hundred the 18th of his Test career and the crowd just loved what they witnessed so early in the Test match. He played a few more shots after that and while he looked pretty solid for another big knock was dismissed on 113 by Wahab Riaz. Warner’s treat included as many as 17 boundaries.
Renshaw by then was well set and led the batting thereafter. Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith were dismissed cheaply as they were out caught behind against Wahab and Yasir Shah. Renshaw placed Shah for a single and punched his fist in the air to celebrate his maiden Test century in the 4th Test of his career. In the last part of the day, he found a partner in Peter Handscomb who is also young in Tests and the duo ensured Australia ended the day on a high with their 121-run partnership.
