Barring the time when Shaheen Shah Afridi got rid of Joe Burns, Pakistan haven’t looked like having any control over Australia at the Adelaide Oval. After the first two days of the Day-Night Test, it can be said that the visitors will need something miraculous to even save the match. At the close of play on Day 2, Azhar Ali and Co are trailing by a titanic 493 runs with four wickets left in the first innings.

Warner dominates after Labuschagne gets out

David Warner (335*) and Marnus Labuschagne (162) added 67 runs to their stand on Friday. The duo put on 361 runs for the second wicket. Afridi gave Pakistan something to cheer for, castling Labuschagne, who hit 22 fours in his knock. Steve Smith (36) stayed in the middle for a brief while before becoming Afridi’s third victim. At the other end, Warner continued to wreak absolute havoc.

He got a lifeline when Muhammad Musa got him caught off a no-ball at gully where Babar Azam took a decent catch. Warner was on 226 at that point in time. In the second session, he carted the bowling and became the seven Aussie batter to a Test triple ton. Matthew Wade (38) also played some delightful strokes. With Australia’s score at 589/3 in 127 overs, Tim Paine called his men back.

Starc rips apart Pakistan

Pakistan got off to the worst possible start after Mitchell Starc drew first blood, getting rid of Imam-ul-Haq. It was then Pat Cummins’ turn to open his account as he pinned the reliable Azhar Ali. Josh Hazlewood joined the party and sent back Shan Masood (19), who was playing with determination. Yet another time in his career, Babar (43*) walked in with a huge task of bailing his side out of jail.

He stayed unbeaten, hitting six fours. Unfortunately, he saw wickets going down at an alarming rate. Starc tore apart the middle-order, which included the likes of Asad Shafiq, Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Rizwan. Australia bowled 35 overs and the pace trio of Starc, Cummins and Hazlewood made inroads. For Pakistan, it now remains to be seen, if they can avoid the follow-on or not.
