Twitter Reactions: Washington Sundar gives Indian fans a ray of hope with his unbeaten 85
India still ended up conceding a mammoth lead of 241 runs after being bowled out for 337 but it could have been much bigger if not for Sundar's contribution.
India’s latest Test all-rounder Washington Sundar is receiving praise from all over for playing yet another crucial knock with the bat for the team in the ongoing first Test against England. The Tamil Nadu ace made his debut in the longest format of the game last month during the fourth Test against Australia in Gabba. He got a chance in the playing eleven only because the injury had ruled the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja out of the series-decider.
He grabbed the opportunity with both hands as he bailed India out of trouble in the first innings and then helped the team win the Test. The youngster picked up three wickets in the first innings before playing a crucial knock of 62. In the second innings, he picked up one more wicket and then played an important 22-run knock towards the end of India’s famous chase.
And the all-rounder played a similar knock on his home ground in the ongoing clash. Sundar failed to deliver with the ball. He bowled 26 overs and went wicketless while conceding 98 runs as England piled up a mammoth total of 578. The 21-year-old, however, made up for his failure with the ball by scoring an unbeaten fifty with the bat.
Washington Sundar impresses with the bat again
Washington Sundar walked out to bat when India were reeling on 192 for 5 after the dismissal of Cheteshwar Pujara. From thereon, he played a very impressive and responsible knock of 85* runs to reduce the lead. India still ended up conceding a mammoth lead of 241 runs after being bowled out for 337 but it could have been much bigger if not for Sundar’s contribution.
While wickets kept falling from one end, Sundar remained firm from the other. The highly-rated allrounder mixed caution with aggression to keep the scoreboard ticking at a good rate. He added 80 runs with Ravichandran Ashwin (31) to take the score past the 300-run mark. Unfortunately for him, he eventually ran out of partners as England wiped India’s tail in no time with the second new ball, leaving Sundar stranded on 85.
While Sundar must be feeling disappointed over not scoring his maiden Test century, he is receiving praise from all over for his stunning knock.
