South Africa continue to dominate the proceedings in the ongoing second and final Test match against Bangladesh at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth. After they posted a stiff total on the first day, the hosts continued their splendid run on the second day and not only did they demoralize the visitors’ pace attack but also dismissed half their side.

While lower-order batter Keshav Maharaj propelled the Proteas to a mammoth first innings total, two of their promising bowlers then took the initiative of running through the Bangladesh line-up which has now forced them to play catch-up with a huge deficit. The worrying factor for the visitors is that they hardly have substantial amount of runs on the board.

Resuming their innings at the overnight score of 278/5, the Proteas batters Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder could not offer much resistance as the Bangladesh bowlers staged a brilliant comeback with the new ball. When it seemed that their innings would be folded in no time, the last match’s hero Keshav Maharaj came as their saviour, but this time with the bat.

He attacked the Bangladesh bowlers with great intent and scored a vital 84 runs from 95 deliveries, before being dismissed by Taijul Islam. An important 29 from tailender Simon Harmer helped the hosts post 453 runs on the board.

In reply, Bangladesh were on the back foot right from the beginning as none of the batters could tackle the Proteas bowling attack and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Just three of them showed some fighting spirit but could not convert their starts into impactful knocks. Veteran opener Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudul Hasan Joy added 79 runs for the second-wicket stand. Tamim scored 47 runs from 57 deliveries, while Joy contributed 33 runs.

Duanne Olivier (2/17) and Wiaan Mulder (3/15) wrecked havoc with the ball in hand for South Africa. Mushfiqur Rahim is still at the crease and Bangladesh would be heaving a sigh of relief as he remained unbeaten on 30 runs along with Yasir Ali who is batting at eight. The visitors ended the second day’s play at 139/5 and trail by 314 runs.
