Wriddhiman Saha made sure that Mumbai Indians will have to make history to beat Kings XI Punjab at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Sent in to open the innings, Saha was equal to the task as he went after the hard new ball to put pressure on table-toppers Mumbai Indians from the outset. He remained unbeaten on 93 as Kings XI piled up 230/3 after 20 overs, the highest total in this year’s IPL.

No team has chased that many runs to win an IPL game ergo; Mumbai will have to create history if they achieve this mammoth target. Put into bat first by Rohit, Punjab rocketed to 71/1 after 6 overs with Saha making 31 of them. The remarkable aspect of Saha’s knock was that he played proper cricketing shots early on to get into a rhythm. He took a particular liking to Mitchell McClenaghan hitting the Kiwi for three boundaries in the innings’ second over. From then on, Saha went from strength to strength to collect runs all around the park.

When Maxwell was going hard at the other end, Saha played the tranquil role by rotating the strike. He anchored through the middle overs hitting the odd boundary to make sure that Punjab’s scoring rate never dropped below 10 runs an over.

As soon as Maxwell perished, Saha took on the role of being the aggressor and hit Harbhajan over long-on for six in the 12th over to reach his half-century off 31 balls. The shot of the innings came in the 15th over of the innings when Saha hit Malinga over long-off for his second six of his knock. When Saha hit his third six – of the first ball of the last over bowled by Pandya – hopes of a possible hundred surfaced. The 32-year old, in the energy-sapping heat of Mumbai, was too fatigued to bother for a hundred and gave the strike to Axar Patel who finished the inning sin style by hitting the last ball for six.

Saha’s innings consumed just 55 balls and was studded with 11 fours and 3 sixes.
