Sydney Thunder locked horns with Hobart Hurricanes in the 50th game of BBL 2019-20. In a crucial match for both the sides, the hosts defeated Callum Ferguson and Co. by a margin of 57 runs. D’Arcy Short took a five-wicket haul that guided his team to a brilliant victory in the match that was played at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

Earlier, Hurricanes won the toss and elected to bat. They got off to a worse possible start as they lost their in-form opener D’Arcy Short in the first over of the match on a duck. The right-arm off-break spinner Arjun Nair castled the left-handed Aussie international that helped Thunder in getting a big breakthrough in the earlier phase of the match.

Macalister Wright, the right-handed batsman came out to bat on number three. He looked quite in flow as he smashed visitors’ bowlers all across the park. He muscled 64 runs off 45 balls studded with four boundaries and three sixes during his swashbuckling knock. Wright was well supported by his skipper Mathew Wade (56 runs off 34 balls) as the duo stitched a brilliant partnership of 97 runs.

Later on, George Bailey played a small cameo of 29 runs off 10 balls with three fours and two sixes. In the end, Hurricanes ended up posting a mammoth total of 185 runs for a loss of six wickets in stipulated 20 overs. Daniel Sams turned out to be the best bowler for his side. He registered amazing bowling figures of 4/34.

Coming onto the chase, Thunder lost their opener, Usman Khawaja, after scoring just eight runs. He tried to smash the ball for a six off James Faulkner over the deep square leg but failed to get his timing right and he was caught by Scott Boland. Meanwhile, Alex Hales acquired an aggressive approach against Hurricanes bowlers’.

He played a brilliant knock of 63 runs off 42 balls with five boundaries and four sixes. Alex Ross also scored 36 runs before his inning came to a halt. Meanwhile, no other batsman successfully clicked a good knock due to which Thunder had to suffer a defeat by a big margin of 57 runs in a crucial clash against Hobart Hurricanes.

The hosts’ bowlers didn’t allow Thunder batters to get settled down on the wicket as they kept on taking wickets at regular intervals. However, D Arcy Short turned out to be the star bowler for the hosts, who took a five-wicket haul. The left-arm chinaman registered brilliant figures of 5/21 and he helped his side in registering a thumping victory in BBL game.

Hobart Hurricanes went past Sydney Thunder in the league table with 11 points. Moreover, they managed to keep their hopes alive to qualify into the playoffs.
