The hosts failed to capitalise on the brilliant start provided by their openers.

After the tamely contested Test series which India won historically by 3-0, the limited overs series has got underway and it is expected that it will be a close contest. The first ODI though, seems to be going the way of visitors as India bundled Sri Lanka out for a meagre total of 216.
Virat Kohli decided to insert Sri Lanka to bat first on a placid surface which looked brilliant for batting. Sri Lanka got off to a brisk start thanks to their openers Dickwella and Gunathilaka. Both kept scoreboard ticking and an odd boundary was coming consistently. The opening partnership was broken by Chahal as the score read a healthy 74 after 14 overs. Mendis joined the party and kept going as both the batsmen got set to take Sri Lanka close to 300. But then Dickwella got out to a part-timer Kedar Jadhav and India started to take control of the innings.
Another Sri Lankan collapse
Spinners, Axar and Chahal bowled tidy lines and increased the pressure on the hosts. That brought the steady fall of wickets as Sri Lanka lost their captain Tharanga and set batsman Mendis. Sri Lanka were in a spot of bother now at 166/4 in the 33rd over. The experienced duo of Kapugedera and Mathews was the crease.
Kapugedera was run out soon courtesy of some brilliant fielding from the skipper Virat Kohli. The collapsed never stopped and Sri Lanka kept losing wickets to spinners as well as seamers. Bumrah cleaned up the tail with his excellent yorkers. The hosts could go past 200 only because of the former captain Angelo Mathews who was left stranded at the other end unbeaten on 36 off 50 deliveries. Sri Lanka bowlers have a tough task on their hands and for now it is looking like the walk in the park for India in this first ODI.
Twitter reacted to Sri Lanka’s collapse who lost their last 9 wickets for just 77 runs.

The economy of 4.38 in ODIs is a testament to Axar Patel's appreciable accuracy! Perhaps needs ammunition to pick up more wickets #INDvSL
