Rishabh Pant has done reasonably well in Test cricket ever since making his debut against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. He opened his account with a six off Adil Rashid to announce his arrival at the highest level. Later, in the final Test at Kennington Oval in London, he scored a ton. Thereafter, he scored a couple of 90’s against Windies in Rajkot and Hyderabad respectively.
However, his ODI and T20I career haven’t quite taken off by any stretch of the imagination. The 21-year-old forayed into the 50-overs format in the five-match series against Jason Holder and Co. He played the first three encounters, but could only manage 41 runs in the matches and was sidelined from the eleven for the last two matches in Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram.
With the World Cup scheduled to be played in England and Wales next year, the Indian selectors are looking for a backup wicketkeeper for MS Dhoni, who is at the fag end of his illustrious career and Pant’s poor shows won’t do any good to him by any means. Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand-born cricketer has had an indifferent T20I career thus far in the six appearances he has made.
Pant struggling in T20Is
After getting sidelined following the triangular series in Sri Lanka, he made a comeback in the T20I series against Windies. Unfortunately, he has flattered in Kolkata and Lucknow as well. In the first match, he came to bat at number four and scored one run off four deliveries after which opposition skipper Carlos Brathwaite dismissed him inside the fielding restrictions.
The second encounter saw him taste failure on more time as he could manage only five runs from six deliveries. Left-arm spinner Khary Pierre, who made his international debut in the series, accounted for his wicket. He would want to make amends in the third and final T20I in Chennai on Sunday. After the poor shows, Twitter lashed out at Pant for not being able to score big.

Rishabh Pant looks clueless in the middle order. It's useless to try him there. So there's no other option for team management but to stick with Dhoni at the moment.#INDvsWI
