Earlier this year, KL Rahul had an incredible time, playing for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he racked up runs with sheer authority, albeit his team couldn’t qualify for the playoffs. The knocks didn’t evade the eyes of the selectors by any stretch of the imagination and he was drafted into the Indian team for the limited-overs series against Ireland and England.
He scored a century in the T20I series against the Three Lions. Subsequently, he was selected for the Test series. However, the red-ball fixtures turned out to be a nightmare for the Karnataka batsman and apart from his ton in the final innings of the last Test at Kennington Oval in London, Rahul strained to get the measure of the playing conditions as well as the lethal English bowling attack.
KL Rahul fails yet again
Nevertheless, he was included for the two-match Test series against Windies where he failed as well. The 26-year-old still wasn’t dropped and he was picked in the 18-man squad for the four-match Test series against Australia. In the first Test at Adelaide Oval, the right-handed Rahul flattered to deceive in the first innings, though he looked determined in the second with a knock of 44 runs.
The second Test at the new Perth Stadium turned out to be a nightmare for him as he could only score a couple of runs, combining both the innings. Subsequently, he didn’t make the cut for the third Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) where Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari opened the batting. Luck favoured Rahul and he was back for the fourth Test at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
After India won the toss and elected to bat first, he spanked a couple of boundaries early to score nine from six balls. To his sheer disappointment, Josh Hazlewood found his outside edge and Shaun Marsh didn’t make any mistake in grasping the leather at first slip. Following the failure, users on micro-blogging site Twitter didn’t leave any stones unturned in trolling Rahul.
Here is how Twitter mocked Rahul
When KL Rahul gets out on a duck, the pitch is pretty tough for the bastmen.
When he scores more than 5 it’s a batting pitch.— डी.के. (@itsdhruvism) January 3, 2019
Virat Kohli: What was the need to bat at a strike rate of 150 and lose your wicket?

Woke up and looked at the score. It was India batting at 5/0. KL Rahul and Mayank had opened for India as expected with Jadeja and Kuldeep both in the team. By the time I could switch on the TV, Rahul is already back in the pavilion. He's going for good now. #INDvAUS #SydneyTest

India won the Toss, elected to bat first. As usual KL Rahul at his best. Gone after scoring 9 off 6 balls. Why was he brought back into the team? #INDvAUS #AUSvIND

Woke up @ 5 in this freezing cold weather. Only to see KL Rahul fail yet again. Why India why? Umesh Yadav as an opener makes more sense to me.#AUSvIND #SydneyTest #Rahul

At least for 35 minutes KL Rahul was the highest run getter in 2019.
