Twitter trolls Rishabh Pant after he was dismissed for a golden duck in the first T20I against Windies
While 21-year-old has proved himself in the longest format of the game, his shot selection and temperament in white-ball cricket has been in question.
India got off to a winning start in the three-match T20I series against Windies. They beat the Caribbean team by four wickets and with 16 deliveries to spare. The pace of the game was pretty slow as only 193 runs in more than 37 overs across both innings. Also, 16 wickets were lost by both sides.
India had won the toss and inserted Windies into bat first. However, the defending World T20 champions never got going. Only two batsmen got into double figures – Kieron Pollard (49) and Nicholas Pooran (20). All the Indian bowlers picked up at least one wicket. Navdeep Saini impressed the most as he picked up 3/17 from his four overs on debut.
India huffed and puffed their way to the paltry target as the sticky nature of the pitch didn’t allow batsmen to score freely.Rohit Sharma top-scored with 24 while Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey scored 19 each. Most of the batsmen tried to spend time in the middle but got out after getting a start.
Pant starts the tour with a golden-duck
However, Rishabh Pant who walked out to bat at No. 4 was dismissed for a golden duck. Yet again, he was out to a questionable shot. Sunil Narine had just dismissed Rohit Sharma and the very next ball, Pant tried to slog sweep and holed out at deep square leg. That was a needless shot and the Delhi stumper paid the price. He has constantly been criticized for his shot selection throughout his career.
In fact, in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, after Pant had done all the hard work, he tried to slog one across the line and was caught on the boundary. Thus, there have been questions on his ability to play to the situation.
While 21-year-old has proved himself in the longest format of the game, his shot selection and temperament in white-ball cricket has been in question. He is pretty inexperienced but has been failing to live up to the reputation. Moreover, he’s been repeating the same mistakes over and over again.
