The Royal Challengers Bangalore were one of the clear favorites to lift the prestigious Indian Premier League Trophy in its iconic 10th edition. With the likes of monumental names such as Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers in their ranks the RCB team seemed second to none on paper. But as the tournament got underway for the 10th time since its inception, we witnessed a completely different story altogether.

The United Spirits-owned franchise finds themselves toil at the extreme bottom of the chart with just 2 wins out of their 12 completed games. Unfortunately enough for the Bangalore-based side, all their big guns have failed to deliver with their bat which has left the whole cricketing world in shock. Often hailed as the ‘Sachin Tendulkar of T20 cricket’ or the ‘Universe Boss’, Chris gayle has fallen victim to age while Indian Skipper Virat Kohli seems to be nowhere near his very best. Arguably the best batsman of this generation, South Africa skipper AB De Villers’ performance can be described as a highly inconsistent one featuring of cracking starts but not a finish.

As the Royal Challengers took on the Kolkata Knight Riders today at home with a jam-packed Chinnaswamy stadium on their side, the fans were hoping for a change in the team’s fortune. It did not take long for the smiles to disappear as Chris Gayle was sent back to the pavilion by Umesh Yadav on a golden duck. The West Indian have been struggling throughout the tournament except a 77 of 38 balls against the Gujarat Lions being his only highlight of the tournament.

The dismissal of Chris Gayle brought Virat Kohli into the middle but the Indian skipper failed to make a mark and was caught by Umesh Yadav on the pads for a minimal score of 5. It has been a familiar situation for the Royal Challengers Bangalore side with the top order misfiring in this edition of the IPL. The knocking down of AB De Villiers by mystery bowler Sunil Narine summed up yet another miserable display of batting from the RCB big three. With qualification far out from their reach, the fans will at least pray for the players to regain their form before the end of the cash-rich league.

Here is how the Twitterati reacted to the horrific breakdown of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB De Villers against the Kolkata Knight Riders today.
