India resumed from their overnight score on Day 4. Both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane struck half-centuries to extend the lead to 200. Rohit Sharma has another failure as he fell prey to Nathan Lyon. Known for his reckless batting, Rishabh Pant went after the off-spinner who otherwise had a good day.
In the very first over after lunch, Pant went bonkers as he struck three consecutive boundaries to Lyon followed by a six. However, Lyon came back in the next over and setup Pant. India raced to 303-6 with Ravichandran Ashwin and Rahane in the middle. With four wickets in hand, India were looking good for 400. That’s where the collapse got triggered.
Mohammed Shami has often been known to be an aggressor at the lower order. The batsman is capable of hitting it out of the boundary. However, of late, his careless attitude has often ended up in his quick dismissals and the Indian tail to fall. It was quite visible in the England tour as well as in the first innings when Pujara was farming the strike.
Just after Rahane’s dismissal, Shami tried to swing the bat on his very first ball. The result was an over-ambitious Shami racing down the track and finding Marcus Harris at deep mid-wicket. It was a senseless shot even by the standards of a tailender. India went from 303-6 to 303-9 in no time as the fans were quite disappointed by the sudden collapse.
No doubt they took the brunt on Shami. Twitter was filled with criticism for Shami’s lazy batting attitude. While there was adulation and respect for his bowling talent, his batting and fielding was equally frustrating. From asking him to bat at No.11 to jokes of him swinging the bat more than ball started doing the rounds.
Here we have some of the Twitter reactions after Shami’s poor batting
Shami will throw his bat at anything right from the South Africa series , somebody should warn him #AUSvIND #indvsaus

Shami with the bat gives brain-fade a good name

Honest question: does Shami swing the bat more than the ball? #AUSvIND

Shami’s bat & Shami’s DM can go anywhere.

Shami is such a jackass with the bat, I swear. Even in the England series, noticed the same thing. Bumrah, probably the least accomplished batsmen amongst our bowlers, shows more application than him.

Mohd Shami will never bat sensibly. Never.

Shami with bat is still a less of horror than Rohit Sharma#AUSvIND

Shami should always bat at 11.
— Nikhil 🏏 (@CricCrazyNIKS) December 9, 2018
Indian cricket team @BCCI needs a minimum batting bar that everyone should clear before selection, like the Yo-Yo test for fitness. Shami just doesn't know how to bat. #cricket #AdelaideTest #AUSvsIND

Shami😂😂 The only no nonsense batsman in World Cricket now. If at all anything, he is a worthy successor of Javagal Srinath in batting.
— Ravi Maestri (@ravimaestri) December 9, 2018
Shami ko lagta hai aajkal batting karne ka man ni karta #INDvsAUS #AUSvIND

For all the talent Shami has, his lack of interest in the field and while he's batting is super frustrating!!#INDvAUS #AUSvIND

Shami and Rohit same level of batting skill in Tests. #AusvInd

Shami shouldn't be batting anywhere before #11 for us. Doesn't really put a price on his wicket like other lower order batsmen. #AUSvIND
— Sharath Sathu (@sharathsathu) December 9, 2018
Disgraceful batting from Shami. Does he think he is the best batsman in the world to hit the best Aussie bowler for 6 of the first ball. India needs to make the bowlers take their batting seriously. Runs from lower order can change the results.#AUSvIND

Shami again.
Indian tail is worst in batting
What was that shot?
Should have scored extra few runs taking singles for few overs.#AUSvIND— Akki (@akkiakki973798) December 9, 2018
Mohammad Shami absolutely has no value for his wicket. Bhuvi needs to be in. Adds batting too. #INDvAUS

The interesting thing about Shami is that he keeps batting like this, and he keeps batting above Bumrah. It suggests something about what Shastri and Kohli consider to be virtues. I cannot imagine Shami not being dropped down to XI under Kumble.

Shami is an idiot. The only thing he is good at hitting is his wife.

In his brief Test career, Bumrah has done enough to merit promotion from No.11, especially if No.10 is Shami. #AUSvIND
