Twitter wants Rohit Sharma back in the Test squad
Middle-order apart from Virat Kohli failed miserably in the first Test.
Team India lost the Edgbaston Test by 31 runs and conceded a lead of 1-0 in the five-match Test series. It was the failure of their batsmen, apart from Virat Kohli, which hurt them big time. The selectors had taken a brave call of dropping Rohit Sharma from the squad for this tour after his failures in the South Africa tour in whites. However, he was in great in the limited-overs leg prior to England Test series and many feel that his presence would’ve won the game for India.
Over the years, despite growing in stature Rohit has failed to seal his spot in the longest format of the game. After the retirement of the stalwarts in the early years of this decade, the stylish player was expected to take up the responsibility and cement the number 5 or 6 position in the line-up.
But after starting his Test career with a bang, the opener in the limited-overs format has failed to cash in on the opportunities presented to him. He was picked in the playing XI ahead of Ajinkya Rahane in South Africa tour, but his technique was exposed against the moving ball. He was then dropped from the third and final game of the series and since then has found himself out of the team.
Does Rohit warrant a selection?
Rohit Sharma fans, however, have lashed out at the selectors now for dropping him after the middle-order failed at Edgbaston. The likes of KL Rahul, Ajinkya Rahane and Dinesh Karthik have failed to live up to the promise and they feel Rohit would’ve played way better than them.
While it could be debated if Rohit had scored in the first Test had he been picked, the performances of the other batsmen have surely come under the scanner. Murali Vijay and Rahane were the star performers of India’s last tour to England, but they are not at all looking confident. Even Rahul’s inclusion has been questioned who played at the expense of Cheteshwar Pujara in the squad.
It remains to be seen if the team management gives another opportunity to these players in the second Test or come up with a plethora of changes.
