Twitterati advocates for a retired player to comeback into England Test side
To make things worse, even Cook is struggling.
Alastair Cook has played with 12 different openers since 2012 and in 2018, is yet to find a stable partner for him. Keaton Jennings who is currently playing in the ongoing Test series against India has looked extremely ordinary with his technique and averages only 24 in the nine Tests he’s played so far. The calls for him to be dropped are growing louder with every match and Twitterati also wants Marcus Trescothick to come out of his retirement and save England’s Test side.
It seems that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) concentrated a little too much on resurrecting their limited-overs fortunes. In fact, they are extremely well in those formats as England qualified for the final of ICC World T20 in 2016 and now are the contenders to win the 50-over World Cup which will take place at home next year. But in the process, the Test team was left reeling or one can say that the issues in the team were overlooked.
Cook’s dismal form
To make thing worse for England, even Cook is running out of form and has scored only 252 runs in 13 innings this year. Even during the Ashes down under, the veteran couldn’t hit the straps and his team more often than not got off to poor starts. Trescothick who retired from international cricket back in 2008 is still around in County cricket and to be fair he is still looking strong with his technique.
He is playing for Somerset and has scored 322 runs in 8 innings this season at a brilliant average of 40.25. He has also scored a century and a couple of fifty-plus scores which proves that the 42-year-old is still capable of playing long innings. His career average of 43.79 in 76 Test matches is not less than an achievement.
Twitterati was also in the favour of bringing him back as England have been totally struggling to find an opener at the international level despite many of them playing well in County.
Here’s how they reacted:
